FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Isn't this just a variation of Meyers-Briggs?
No. The categories of Meyers Briggs are extremely useful for certain
analysis, but do not take into account many factors that are important
to today's learners, such as speed, fun, etc.
Isn't this just like any other generational
change?
True there have always been generational differences as each generation of young people seeks to find its own identity and distinguish itself from the generation of its parents. And older folk have always found the new ways of the young hard to understand, from jitterbug to rock and roll, to body piercing and bright colored hair. But this is different. Something new has happened here in that minds, as well as outward behaviors, have changed. The result is a discontinuity not seen before. While the youth of today may grow up to look and dress and behave more like their parents as they raise families, etc. their thinking styles and learning styles will remain forever different.
I'd like to use games, but how do I convince
my management?
The arguments are presented and elaborated in Chapter 13 of the book: "Convincing Management and Getting the Bucks: The Business Case for Digital Game-Based Learning."
I have a very small [or no] budget. What
can I do?
Digital Game-Based Learning can be introduced "bottom-up" as well as "top down." As described in chapter 13, you can begin with no budget at all, but merely some effort on your part to think and teach or train differently. You can experiment with free tools, involve your students in creating games and game content, invent new learning games on your own. You can subscribe to Thiagi's Games Newsletter, participate in the twitchspeed.com discussions, find like-minded colleagues, and search for emerging Digital Game-Based Learning in your subject area. If you are prepared, the opportunities to create and use Digital Game-Based Learning will arrive.
