FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does it cost?
In Chapter 13 I review what can be done at different cost levels.
To summarize, there is some Digital Game-Based Learning that can
be created or obtained for "free" (i.e. spending only for in-house
resources), a great deal of simple things that can be accomplished
for under $1,000 through templates and e-mail, a wide variety
of template, e-mail and off-the-shelf Digital Game-Based Learning
that can be had for under $100,000. Custom Digital Game-Based
Learning development at the graphics level of consumer games typically
takes $1-5 million, perhaps half of which can be internal costs,
and the rest external.
Assuming the project has wide application, and management is
open to selling it, some or all of this cost can potentially be
recouped through outside sales to other organizations.
I like the concept, but how do I know
it will work for my trainees?
One great way is to ask them. This can be done via focus groups,
demonstrations of existing products by you and by vendors, soliciting
their ideas and suggestions, and comparing your population to
that at companies where Digital Game-Based Learning has been successful.
